Sunny Rose Computer Training - Web Page Design

Not sure how to design a web page? Then you have come to the right place:

If you have Microsoft Office on your computer, then you will have a copy of a program called FrontPage. This is a web design program - it will automatically assist you to insert background images, links, images, and text. Well not quite automatically. You have to learn how to use the menu options - keep reading these pages and you will learn how to use FrontPage. There are also links to other web page design sites, HTML editors, etc.

You use FrontPage just like a word processor and once you have inserted some text or images you can see how it will look as a web page. I prefer to use notepad (a text editor) or you can go online and download a HTML editor program yourself.

Open FrontPage and you will see a blank page. Have a look at the bottom of the screen - there are three tabs - called "Normal", "HTML" and "Preview". While you are designing a web page you can do all your designing in Normal view. Then you can click on Preview to see how it will look as a web page - the HTML tab allows you to see the code behind the scenes. Don't go there if you are scared of code!
This is how a new blank page looks in FrontPage. If you click on the image you will go to a new web page, and you can see a bigger version of this image.

Now if you add a background to this new blank page you will begin to see how your web page will turn out.

In FrontPage, (with the Normal tab selected) click on Format, then Background. Under the Background tab, click on the square beside background picture, to place a tick inside the square. Then click on the word Browse to go to a folder where you can select a nice background for your page. I generally keep all my images in one folder, so that you can always go to the same folder to select images, backgrounds, icons, or other types of graphics to enhance your web page.
This is how the once blank page looks with a background image inserted into it.

And what about inserting a picture in to the web page? Click on Insert, Picture, From File. Move to your folder (where you have stored all your files and images). Select a nice picture, and then click okay to insert the picture into your web page. If the image is too big or too small you can resize it - you select the picture and drag the corner of the picture towards the middle of the page to make it smaller, or stretch it out to make it bigger.

Now that you have added a background and an image to this page, let's look at the code (the HTML) for this page. In FrontPage click on the HTML tab down the bottom and see what you have created. Pretty impressive!

This is lesson one ( a very basic lesson ) on how to use FrontPage to create a web page. So far you have only done two steps. Hope that it feels easy so far.

Other things to consider when you are creating a web page are:
  • lots of images
  • lots of background images
  • a folder where you store all your files, images and web pages
  • access to a web server (either paid or free)
  • a file uploading program (FTP) or a web server that allows you to upload your files
  • lots of time and patience
  • a vision of what you want to share with the WWW (World Wide Web)
  • it could be a hobby, an interest, a passion, some information you have found on the Web or just a calendar or diary to a friend or family member

Any piece of information may have a relevance or be important to some other person who accesses your web page. If you are passionate about something, then tell the world. Keep your pages simple and plain - not too much Flash or Flashy images jumping all over the screen. You also need to know how to access search engines and how to advertise your site (for free) to a mass of search engines so that people know where to find you and your information.
